Hurricane Relief

If you can, please donate to the American Red Cross and select that you want to give to Hurricane Rita.

I don't want to sound selfish asking for you to donate to it instead of Katrina, but Rita has not had as many donations as Katrina has simply because it just happened this weekend. Of course, on a personal level, Rita is more important to me because it affected my family.

There are other organizations to give to as well, but I know the money will be put to good use by the Red Cross.

hurricane update

i am not really sure where to begin...maybe a list would be easier...

-we found out that most everyone's houses were ok (from brief examination), but my uncle did have a tree go through his roof. they are trying to remove it before they head up here. they have run out of gas for their generator, and as you guys probably know, there is NO gas anywhere around there.

-it could be 2-4 weeks before all power and water are restored to the Beaumont area, so we will most likely have family with us for a while. Dustin and I were housing my dad's cousin, Linda, and her husband, but they have moved over to Mom and Dad's house for a while to give Dustin and I a rest before the rest of them head up here.

-we went ahead and had Dad's bday lunch yesterday...all 17 of us. it did go very well, though...i was really happy that everyone seemed to enjoy the food and the company.

-Mom and Dad got home safely and on-time from Spain Sat. evening. they had a wonderful time. i will post more about that later on.

thanks for all the warm wishes you guys continue to send our way...i think they have most definatley helped see my family through this in a lot better shape than they could have been.

the hurricane

for those who know that my family is from the Beaumont/Port Arthur area:

most of Dad's side of the family is accounted for. some of them are here with us, my other uncle and his family went to Jasper.

the hurricane hit the Beaumont area head on about 2:30am CDST. There was substantial wind damage and over 8" of rain. the concern now is whether the storm will stall over Texas over the next few days dumping even more rain on them. we have not yet heard about specific damage to my family members' homes, but we do know a few emergency workers who stayed behind that will hopefully be able to tell us sometime today.

thank you for all of those who have sent good wishes and prayers for my family. it is deeply, deeply appreciated.

a small request

I ask that you keep my family that lives down in the Beaumont/Houston/Galveston area in your thoughts and prayers over the next few days. While it looks like they will not get a direct hit from Hurricane Rita, they will still get a tremendous amount of rain and wind. Also please keep my parents in your thoughts as they return Saturday from their trip to Portugal and Spain. We are hoping the weather won't be too terribly bad as they try to land in Austin Saturday evening.

new issue of Domino sends me window shopping online

Conde Nast...evil bringers of such delights as Lucky and Domino. How on earth can a girl save money when your glossy pages detail delights of clothing, makeup, plush rugs, bright pillows, food ideas that make me drool?

A few things that I am currently lusting after:

Fruit Tree Pillow

Jadeite Desk Set

Dinner Party Journal

Euthymol Toothpaste

great source for vinyl records

Saturday stuff

mood: worn out, but productive
listening to: Torn - Natalie Imbruglia

Why do I have the feeling this weekend will pass all too quickly? I have so much to do. I need to start getting ready for Dad’s birthday party next Sunday. I want to go to Home Depot and get a new hanging plant for the front porch and I need to put out the autumn door mat from garage. I already pulled out a vine from the flower bed along the front walkway yesterday morning. It was totally choking my boxwoods and my miniature rose bush. *shakes fist at it* I also cleaned the birdbath…it was nast. :p I have also been cleaning the house. I did the kitchen floor and vacuumed. I also pulled the last of the purple stuff from our bedroom (since we now have our red comforter set) and moved it up the front bedroom. I also rearranged the linen closet and made room for table cloths in it. I may also go grocery shopping this weekend for the meal so if I end up forgetting something, I will have a week to go back and pick it up.

As much work as it will be, I am very excited to be doing this for Dad. I told him and Mom that I would start doing birthday meals for them. Mom’s bday always gets overlooked because it is close to Memorial Day, which is our family reunion weekend every other year. And since the only other family meal I get is New Year’s Day, this will give me two more times a year to entertain. I love to entertain…I just don’t have the opportunity to do it very often. Of course, we have Ari & Jeff or Erin & Hunter over for dinner, but I don’t get to go all out for those meals. Maybe I should start. *g*

why do ppl have to be jerks?

mood: pissed off

To the asshat that tailgated me from the Parmer/Lamar turn all the way to the agency this morning...screw you. I am sorry you are a middle-aged man with what must be a complex over the size of his manhood. I am sorry that I obeyed the traffic laws this morning. I am sorry I let people over into the left lane of the access road before their lane ended. I am not sorry, however, that I flipped you off as you finally went around me and looked back me at over shoulder, giving me a dirty look. Thanks a lot for putting me in a bad mood, f***wit.

Classic Movie Survey

After taking the movie survey from Laurie, I decided to make my own for classic movies. I constructed my list of movies by compiling the American Film Institute's 100 Years 100 Movies, 100 Years 100 Passions, 100 Years 100 Laughs, and 100 Years 100 Thrills lists. I removed duplicate entries, of course, and I limited the movies to the years of 1930-1970, inclusive.

There are 173 movies listed here. Post this in your journal with the movies marked and your total in the subject line. I inserted subtotals throughout the list to help you tally them more easily. :)

And away we go!

my answers

my total was 71. I really thought it would be higher than that :( *scampers off to netflix list*

mmm...saturday

Just a quick post to show off the new hair :) Nothing fancy...just trimmed a bit and re-layered.

D and I are laying low this weekend. I did go with Ari to G'town this morning. Got my hair cut, ran by Mom and Dad's to pick something up, then Ari and I went crazy in the fall home stuff at Wal-Mart. Ok, not crazy crazy, but we both got some super cute stuff for very little money. I was trying to find a centerpiece for Dad's bday lunch in two weeks. Then we headed back to Leander where Ari treated me to lunch at Jardin del Rey...mmm...enchiladas verdes. :)

Friday

mood: wheeee!
listening to: nothin' yet

Wheeee....I took a decongestant before lunch and I am *buzzin* now! :) heee. My allergies are making me all congested and crap...its the suck. :p

Other than that, work has been quiet today, so I have been messing around online a lot. Luckily my team leader is not taking an interest in me so I can get away with it. I do need to finish up some stuff for our internal webpages, though.

Tonite I am going to Mom and Dad's to see them before they leave for Spain for 2 weeks. I am so happy for them that they are getting to take another awesome trip. :) I will miss them, though. I talk to them 2-3 times a week. That doesn't count the little times I pick up the phone to talk to Mom about random stuff only she appreciates/understands.

After I get back from Mom and Dad's, Ari is coming over to hang out with me while Dustin goes hog hunting again. She's such a sweetpea enteraining me tonite. :)

Hope you guys all have a great weekend! *hugs*

My Dark Dreams

My Haven

My Journal

Read My Mind

Shadowed Thoughts

Welcome

Comment and let me know which one/s y'all like. Maybe it will help me decide which one to use. :)

just a note...

to thank the good Lord for watching after Wanda and her family and allowing them to survive the hurricane safely and with minimal damage to their homes.

We heard from her mid-morning and she, Rascal, Squirt, & Princess (her furr babies) all survived, just all very tired and ready to start their lives again. They only had trees and limbs down in their yard...none of them hit her house.

Mom sent me a link to a good blog to keep up with the latest information on Katrina.

http://blogs.chron.com/sciguy/

It also links to blogs from New Orleans that are still up and running. Definately a different way to hear what's going on.

PS - To my Mom's friend, Wanda, in Mississippi:
I really hope you and the kitty babies survived the storm, Wanda. I think about you every day and cannot wait til we hear from you. We love you and our prayers are with you.
